When decorating, don't forget to give your walls some visual and useful appeal.

You may have heard of a wall sconce, and are trying to picture one in your mind since it's not something you typically see every day in a home. A sconce is a decorative item that is attached to a wall and is designed to give off light through either a traditional light, or a candle. Sconces can be made from metal, wood or ceramic to match any decor you may have in your home.

Sconces originated in the 1400's and continue to enjoy popularity today in both homes and businesses. While scones today are as stylish as they are functional, in the 1400's sconces served a purely functional purpose. When sconces were first introduced, they were nothing more than a piece of metal shaped in a half circle that held a candle. This semicircle was attached to a flat, basic plate that could be attached to a wall.

Over time, sconces became more and more decorative. Elizabethan 'candle plates of latten' were soon developed and were in use by the 1500's. These more decorative sconces continued evolving into the 1600's. One style that emerged in the 1600's had branches which extended from the lowest point of the metal dish, and the dishes themselves were made from more attractive brass or copper.

Sconces continued to grow in popularity, and as they did the designs became more decorative, and increasingly complex. Each individual part began to show more detail as they became pieces of art in and of themselves. Mirrors came to be used as back plates so that the light could be reflected and magnified, making them even more useful and attractive. The single sconce gave way to a half candelabrum that could hold two or more candles, and when this was combined with the mirrored back plate an image of a complete candelabrum could be enjoyed. In the 1640's a sconce was designed that resembled a human hand gripping a candle-holder, complete with a human forearm which extended from a mask or hole.
